Are you leaving your legacy? … a little whimsical share

Tuesday was Pancake Day here in the UK, and as I frantically pulled together another lockdown dinner to stop the teenagers – already ten-eighths full of pancake and syrup – from disappearing into their gaming worlds, I asked a simple question:

Who inspires you the most?

What followed was a conversation that moved me deeply and sparked a reflection on impact, legacy, and the small ways we shape the world around us.

The Inspiration Around Our Table

My tall teen spoke first, thoughtfully sharing why Marcus Rashford inspired him. He admired Rashford’s contributions off the pitch – his advocacy for free school meals, his drive to give back, and the way he used his platform to create positive change.

My sporty teen followed, choosing Anthony Joshua. He spoke about his passion, hard work, and determination to turn his life around, admiring how he rose from challenges to achieve greatness while staying grounded.

When it was my turn, I shared that Barack Obama inspires me. His calmness, authenticity, and ability to connect at all levels resonate deeply with me. His leadership, balanced with his unwavering commitment to his family, is a model I hold close.

Finally, it was Mr M’s turn. Quietly, he said:

“My dad.”

The room fell silent as he continued.

“He was such a tremendous man. Everyone who met him was touched by his kindness. He would put his last £5 in the charity tin. He worked six and a half days a week, we never went without, and he encouraged me to be me,  loyal, hardworking, and above all, kind. George was a truly wonderful man who cared deeply about others and his family. If I am half the man he was, then I am proud.”

A Moment of Reflection

As you can imagine, that moment stayed with all of us. As the teens eventually retreated to their rooms, I could sense them processing the weight of what they had just heard.

Sadly, George is no longer here, and I never had the privilege of meeting him. But through the stories shared by his family, his legacy of kindness and hard work lives on.

It got me thinking:

  • What legacy do I want to leave behind?

  • What difference do I want to make, not just in the big, sweeping ways, but in the small, everyday moments?

  • What Impact Are You Making?

Life moves fast. We juggle work, family, and responsibilities, often without stopping to consider the impact we’re making day to day.

But maybe we should.

Maybe we should pause and ask:

  • What difference am I making to those around me?

  • What small acts of kindness will ripple outwards long after I’m gone?

  • What legacy do I want to leave behind?

The Legacy of Everyday Kindness

Impact doesn’t have to mean grand gestures. Sometimes it’s about showing up, being kind, and leaving people better than you found them.

George’s legacy wasn’t built on wealth or fame,  it was built on loyalty, hard work, and care for others. That’s the kind of impact that lasts, the kind that shapes generations.

And in case you’re wondering, Mr M is every bit his father’s son – a tremendous man who makes an immense difference to everyone he meets.

What’s Your Legacy?

Take a moment today to ask yourself:

  • Who inspires you?

  • What impact are you leaving behind?

Because in the end, our legacy isn’t about what we accumulate – it’s about the lives we touch.
