Friday Fails: The Big Red Button

Last week I delivered the exact same webinar three times.

Not because demand was overwhelming.

Not because I’d invented a thrilling new format where you pay to watch me say the same thing repeatedly.

Because I forgot to press record.

The first one was genuinely lovely. People turned up live and we had genuine connection and conversations … the kind where someone says the thing everyone’s secretly thinking, and the whole room quietly exhales and I finished glowing.

Then someone asked when they’d get the recording.

Reader…. there was no recording.

Somewhere during a full hour of me being warm, insightful and professional, I had failed to press the very large, very obvious button helpfully labelled “Record.”

Now, old Georgie would have spiraled. There’d have been a dramatic hissyfit about not being cut out for technology, possibly delivered to the kettle, and at least one biscuit consumed standing up at the counter for emotional rather than nutritional reasons.

New Georgie took a breath.

New Georgie decided this was a problem for Later Georgie.

So four hours later, I sat down and did the whole webinar again…. THE FULL HOUR….. Solo this time, talking with great enthusiasm to absolutely no one, like I was presenting a cooking show in an empty kitchen.

I finished and I uploaded it and I felt deeply competent and proud.

And then I watched it back.

For sixty minutes, I had not shared my screen.

Not once.

A whole hour of me gesturing fondly towards slides, activities, tools and frameworks that, as far as the viewer was concerned, simply did not exist. Pointing at nothing whilst referring warmly to “this here.” and inviting people to “have a look at that”, where “that” was the inside of my own head.

At this point I considered a complete career change…. Gardening, perhaps….Something with no buttons.

But I slept on it. I made a slightly stronger cup of tea. (read wine) and I put my face back on.

And I did it a third time.

Third time, the screen was shared, the button was pressed, and, I’ll be honest, it was the best version of the three. Calmer. Clearer. The kind of thing you’d actually want to watch, assuming you could see it, which this time you finally could.

The funny thing is I’m now weirdly fond of the whole saga.

The first version had the people.

The second version had the practice.

The third version had the screen, the recording, and the people now watching at home, none of whom needed to know about versions one and two.

Until now.

So if this week you’ve missed something blindingly obvious, sent the email with the attachment confidently described and gloriously absent, talked someone through a document you never shared, pressed every button except the one that mattered.

I see you.

We’ve all forgotten the big red button.

Some of us have just forgotten it twice in one afternoon and lived to tell you about it.
